An Alaskan visits Perth

An Alaskan got onto the bus this morning as I was on my way to work. He had just flown in and was on his way to the beach. I suggested Cottesloe or Rottnest, and he said he’d heard good things about Margaret River*.

To go to the beach in Alaska they take three pieces of bulky luggage and wear business suits. At least, that is what I assume. Admittedly, I only have one data point for this assumption but I’m sticking to it because it amuses me.

He seemed quite friendly, and complimented us “Ossies” for our friendliness and helpfulness, saying Americans always say they want to visit Australia but never get around to it.

So, whoever you are, I hope you enjoy your stay – I’m sure you’ll find you’ve picked the best part of Australia to visit.

* For those who don’t know Perth: Cottesloe is probably the most popular beach near the city; Rottnest is a beautiful island that is a short ferry ride away; and Margaret River is several hours away down south, popular with wine lovers but (technically) devoid of beaches (although it’s not far from Yallingup, which is popular with surfers).
